Legal Frame for Electronic ID

The government approved, during the August 29th session, the orders for the juridical status of the Electronic Identity Card, an initiative of the Public Administration Ministry. The introducing and coming into force of the electronic ID cards is one of the priorities established by the current government strategy for the implementation of electronic systems in the public administration process, approved by Government Decision no. 1007/ 2001

The electronic ID will be used not only as a simple ID card, but will also offer access to all the on-line administration services that request a certain level of user identification and will serve as multi-functions instrument. Through the introducing of the e-ID, the citizens will be able to store on a single card the identity documents, the driver's license and the election card.

The electronic signature that can be stores on the e-card will represent, for all the citizens, the main way to obtain access to the on-line information and services provided by the private or public agencies. Juridically, this kind of signature can also insure the validity of electronically sent documents.

During the second implementation stage, the e-ID card will also contain the individual data referring to health and social insurance and will provide fast access to medical assistance and services.

The electronic card will function together with the current documents until the total replacement, the public authorities being expected to enable the use of such documents through the implementation of proper infrastructure.
