Intel announced the signing of an agreement with the Catalonia Technical
University, in order to conduct several research and development projects
in the microprocessors area. The partnership includes the opening of a research
lab in the Barcelona campus - "Intel Labs Barcelona (ILB)", before
the end of the year.
The center will contribute to Intel maintaining its top position in the
processors research and development, continuing the traditional high performance
for the next generations of equipment. The partnership will also enable
Intel to co-operate with the most important processor researchers in Europe,
without cutting them from their European academic community.
Intel's scientists will collaborate with the Computer Architecture Department
within UPC, in order to develop new, revolutionary technologies for the
future architectures of the Intel Itanium and Intel Pentium processors
family. The research efforts will focus on the performance increase, lowering
the consumption and increase of battery lifetime. The center will be conducted
by three university teachers: Antonio Gonzalez, one of the best in microarchitecture,
together with Roger Espasa and Toni Juan, experts in the 64 bits processors.
