Oracle Leads on the Modern Databases Market

The Gartner/ Dataquest study on database management solutions license sales in 2001 confirms the leading position of Oracle, with a 39.8% share.

Oracle clearly dominates the segment of relational databases for the UNIX operating system, with a 63.3% market share, as well as the UNIX and Windows platforms segment, with 49.9%. The Gartner study appreciates that the database market generated some 8.8 billion dollar incomes for the producers, showing an insignificant growth - a bare 1.4% compared to 2000.

The evolution is a result of the general crisis, that equally affected all companies. Although the independent studies - like the one conducted by Mercury News agency, prove that Oracle is one of the very few compaies with profits in this period, the Oracle databases sales were severely influenced by the lower investments in IT from the high-tech and telecomm companies. Despite these circumstances, with the 2.9 billion sales and a 39.8% maket share, Oracle remains the leader of the modern database market (the relational database) for UNIX, Linux and Windows NT, a market evaluated at 7.1 billion dollars.
